interesting post Cecilia. I like the idea of AI labs competing to make high performing AI models with the least environment impact during training and inference applications.
Similar to the various level of effort put into safety work, I think these distinctions can help the public make better select the AI labs and models they want to support that are the closely aligned to their values.
Totally agree with your latter point Dan -- and I think this starts with driving awareness amongst the public that there are distinctions between models (whether those distinctions are related to safety, or climate footprint, or accuracy, etc.). My general perception now is that many folks reach for the easiest, first-to-market option that they hear about in the news the most (i.e. ChatGPT).
If we could increase knowledge around the issues at hand and then the distinctions - this could totally empower people to be making choices that feel more aligned.
Thank you! This is a topic that has bothered me immensely, and I'm so glad you're addressing it. Climate sustainability affects us all, and poorer people and countries are impacted by our use. Thanks for your strong ethic.
Fascinating. I am among the ones who haven’t been thinking about this! I also am currently working with a renewable energy company who is directly targeting data centers, but the amount of infrastructure necessary to get them running on renewables is so far from where we are now. Great post!

Thank you for this. It's disturbing the negative impact AI has on the environment and little how it's mentioned in mainstream media.
